“Excerpts from the Contemporary Opera *On the Streets of Cairo*”
A special musical event took place on Monday, April 8, 2024, at the Association of Egyptian Greeks, with the theme “Excerpts from the contemporary opera *On the Streets of Cairo*,” by composer Efi Markoulaki, based on the book of the same title by Egyptian author Persa Koumoutsi “On the Streets of Cairo—A Stroll with Naguib Mahfouz” (published by Psychogios).
The event was introduced by Ms. Iliana Themistokleous, who spoke about the impressive backgrounds of the creators and artists, as well as the uniqueness of the production we were fortunate enough to witness.
We were spectators of an exceptional work—a difficult, distinctive, and unique endeavor, since adapting a book into a libretto is no easy task. And yet it was crowned with success, both in terms of the text and its musical interpretation.
Congratulations to the libretto’s creators: Persa Koumoutsi and Efi Markoulaki, and to the soloists who graced the event: Elena Maragkou (mezzo-soprano), Elena Christodoulou (piano), and theater director and actor Avgustinos Remoundos, who read excerpts from the libretto.
Special thanks to Makis Kyriakidis for the video recording, Stelios Kyritsis for the photography, and Takis Sfakianopoulos for the technical support.
At the conclusion of the event, commemorative certificates were presented to the participants by the President
